How to Obtain a Copy of a Marriage Certificate

Certified marriage certificates after May 1, 1913 are available only from the Office of Vital Statistics in Topeka.

To request marriage certificates you must:

  • Be a person named on the certificate
  • Be parents or immediate family named on the certificate
  • Be a legal representative (information must be in writing)
  • Be able to prove a direct interest (information must be in writing)

If you have been recently married, you should wait about three (3) weeks after you have returned the completed marriage license before your request.  This required form should have been provided to you when you received your marriage license.

Uncertified marriage certificates previous to May 1, 1913 in Johnson County may be requested from the archives at (913) 715-0400.
