Frequently Asked Questions

Juvenile Community Service

Juveniles who are granted Diversion or placed on probation by the District Court will be required to complete community service work as a condition of their Diversion or probation. The exact number of hours will be determined by the current offense and the juvenile’s prior record.

Juveniles have the following two options available to complete the community service hours:

1) Juveniles can seek out their own non-profit organization, and request permission to complete the assigned hours. Juveniles will be required to provide proof of the completed hours to the Court Services Officer (CSO) in the form of a letter from the individual who supervised the community service work. This correspondence from the supervising party must be submitted on the agency's letterhead. The following are examples of acceptable non-profit organizations.

  • Churches
  • Schools
  • Salvation Army
  • Community Centers
  • YMCA
  • Youth Court
  • The Teen Link -- (913) 312-7373

2) Juveniles can contact a representative from the Volunteer Center of Johnson County, Y.E.S. (Youth Excelling in Service) by phone at 913-341-1792 or by e-mail at info@vcjc.org. They will schedule an appointment to meet with the juvenile and/or their parents. Based on the juveniles residence, interests and skills, the representative from the Y.E.S. Program will provide the juvenile with referrals to appropriate community services work sites. It’s the juvenile’s responsibility to contact the approved agencies, schedule the community service work, and to submit proof to the Volunteer Center that the hours have been completed. This is done by scheduling an exit interview with the Volunteer Center. Juveniles will be awarded community service hours for the initial interview and the exit interview. Juveniles may also obtain referrals from the Volunter Center for referral information only.

If you have questions regarding the completion of community service work hours, please contact your supervising officer, or the Court Services Juvenile Division at 913-715-7400.
