Juvenile Mentorship Program

The Juvenile Mentorship Program is designed to promote and encourage positive lifestyle changes through friendship and guidance of a positive role model.

The objectives of the program are:

  • Provide general guidance to at-risk youth.
  • Promote personal and social responsibility among at-risk youth.
  • Increase participation of at-risk youth in elementary and secondary education and enhance their ability to benefit from this schooling.
  • Discourage use of illegal drugs and firearms, involvement in violence, and other delinquent activity by at-risk youth.
  • Encourage participation in service and community activity by at-risk youth.

The mentor will be required to meet with the mentee at least once per week, for a minimum of two hours each session. The mentor and mentee will decide upon activities such as help with homework, attending a community event, watching a movie, hiking, exercising, etc. These activities will in no way interfere with the juvenile’s education or court responsibilities.

The mentor will make weekly contact with the mentee’s supervising officer, and submit a bi-weekly written report of contacts with the juvenile, difficulties encountered, and progress to date. These oral and written reports will be utilized by the supervising officer and the court to make adjustments to the offenders program plan when necessary.

"The support and example of caring adults play a critical role in helping youth at risk for delinquency to overcome the challenges they face. Juvenile mentoring programs are an effective means of providing at-risk youth with the adult assistance and positive role models they require."

- John J. Wilson, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention
