Juvenile
Internship/Volunteer FAQs
Q. Is the Juvenile Services Division a safe place to volunteer?
A. Yes! Though there have been incidents with staff, juveniles look forward to
volunteers visiting them. Volunteers provide fun and educational programs which stimulate
their minds and bodies. We have had no incidents of major behavior problems during a
volunteer program.
Q. What can I do as a volunteer?
A. You can find a list of current volunteer positions under the volunteer
opportunities section of this web-site. We are always looking for new and innovative
activities to add to our Volunteer Program. We are willing to work with volunteers to make
their ideas work. We have opportunities available at the Juvenile
Detention Center, Juvenile House Arrest, the Case Management Unit, and the Juvenile
Intensive Supervision Program.
Q. How do I become a volunteer?
A. You must complete a volunteer application packet, attend the Volunteer Training Academy, pass a background check, receive a
tuberculosis skin test, and have a physician sign a health assessment form, clearing you
medically to volunteer.
Q. How much time would I have to donate in order to volunteer?
A. Our Volunteer Program provides opportunities for those who may be able to
donate an hour every other month, to programs that require 2-3 hours a week, to
internships requiring 3-5 hours a day. We will work with volunteers to match their need
with those of the division they are volunteering for.
Q. Do I need any special training? What if I have volunteered/worked in a similar
setting before?
A. We provide training for all of our volunteers on the rules, regulations, dos, and
don'ts of working with juvenile offenders. All volunteers are required to complete this
training. Due to differences in organizational operations, even those with previous
experience will need complete the Volunteer Training Academy.
