Juvenile Volunteer Academy

Kansas Department of Health and Environment regulations, as well as American Correctional Association standards, require all volunteers to receive training prior to volunteering within a correction facility.  To meet these requirement, we have developed a Volunteer Training Academy.  This four-hour block of training is designed to prepare volunteers for situations they may encounter while volunteering in the Juvenile Department of Corrections.

The Academy provides a tour of the Juvenile Detention Center and has a broad training curriculum focused on:

  • Confidentiality
  • Safety/Security
  • Emergency Procedures
  • Volunteer Guidelines
  • Behavior Modification
  • Volunteer Perspectives
  • Staff Perspectives

Please note: All volunteer/Intern and Volunteer Organization Review Academy's classroom instruction commences promptly at 6:30p.m. This being he case, all participants are required to report to the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center (JCJDC), located at 915 West Spruce Olathe, Kansas by no later than 6:15pm

All organizations leaders are asked to contact Mark a week prior to the review training in order to confirm who will be in attendance.

All potential new Volunteers and Interns must make an appointment to meet with either the Special Programs Supervisor or Activities Coordinator at least two weeks prior to the date of the academy they wish to attend. All paperwork (with the exception of the TB test and Health Assessment) as well as information to conduct a criminal background check must be submitted at that time.

All potential and returning volunteers/interns must have a current drivers license or other photo identification with them the night of the academy.

Academy dates are subject to change based upon the needs of the volunteers/interns and the department.

For additional information please contact Mistie Roberts, Activities Coordinator at 913-764-7411.
