Juvenile Education/Counseling Services

Resource Development -- Assist probationers in locating gainful employment, and to assign the community service work sites. Community service work is performed at not-for-profit agencies. Assistance will also be given to address educational needs.

Pre-Employment Training -- Creates an opportunity for the client to prepare for the obstacles that employment issues present, and to develop strategies to enhance their abilities in the job market.

Lifeskills -- Presents topics by a variety of community professionals and staff to deal with issues of employment, interviewing, personal hygiene, values-morals, etc.

Offenders Group-- Addresses, in a group setting, fundamental issues of dealing with the everyday stressors of life (e.g. successful completion of probation).   The group interaction provides for self-evaluations and options/choices for positive "thinking" replacing the "error in thinking" which may have resulted in the violation of the law.

Anger Management -- Teaches groups of kids key concepts in managing anger. The first is that they are responsible for their feelings and they have a choice about how they manage them. They are given some techniques to de-escalate intense feelings and are asked to create an anger management plan for themselves.

Tobacco-Free Teens -- Empowers youth to examine their tobacco use and provide them with skills to quit. The key to the program is increasing their motivation to quit by adding knowledge about the benefits of quitting. They learn to manage urges through developing a relapse plan for themselves.

Changing Lives Through Literature -- A seven-week program which includes juvenile offenders (who have been Court ordered to attend), two facilitators from the Johnson County Library, an Intensive Supervision Officer and a Juvenile Judge. The program involves reading books and then getting together to discuss them. The program focuses on the idea that literature has the power to change the lives of criminal offenders. It is based upon the belief that modern literature is the best tool our society has to explore human identity. The Department helps facilitate both a juvenile group and an adult group. It is most often used in lieu of a return to Court for probation violations.
